Mokume Gane
This is great metal art
| This Japanese term means "wood grain". These pieces are made using different colours of metal: brass, copper, and silver or rose gold, yellow gold, and white gold. The layers of metal are fused by heat and pressure to bond them together. Then the layered stack is rolled thin to about one half of the original thickness. Next, it's cut in half and fused again. This process is done up to 4 times for good results. Finally, the metal is textured on one side and then sanded flat on the other to reveal the layering or "wood grain" effect. |
| At Redd Line Jewellery a further step is taken. A layer of silver is added to the interior of our brass, copper, and silver Mokume rings. This aids in the comfortability of wearing the work. Since brass and copper may also "green" the skin of some people, the addition of the silver layer helps delete this chemical process. |
